1 Year In Office: Benue SUBEB Chairman Highlights Achievements

The Executive Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, has recorded remarkable achievements within her first year in office. Under Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration, the board successfully accessed three consecutive Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grants, a feat described as unprecedented in the state’s history.
Dr. Adagba also spearheaded transformative initiatives aimed at revitalizing basic education in Benue State. These include the remodeling of the SUBEB headquarters with functional internet services and an automated payroll system, the completion of a Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the recruitment of over 1,000 teachers, and the introduction of astronomy-rich programs in basic schools. Additionally, she facilitated the sponsorship of students to an international bilateral debate competition in Indonesia, where they emerged victorious.
Speaking during the grand finale of the Basic Schools’ inter-local debate and quiz competition organized by SUBEB to commemorate her one year in office, Dr. Adagba commended Governor Alia’s prioritization of teachers’ welfare. She highlighted the implementation of the ₦75,000 minimum wage for workers, which has significantly boosted morale in the education sector.

The Chairman reaffirmed the Governor’s commitment to transforming basic education in the state through infrastructure development, digital integration, and overall academic excellence. She emphasized that public schools in Benue are gradually regaining their former glory, attributing the progress to the Governor’s visionary leadership and the collective support of stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, UBEC State Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Baba, and the Commissioner for Energy, Science, Technology, and Transportation, Mr. Nick Eworo, lauded Governor Alia’s dedication to revitalizing basic education and praised Dr. Adagba’s leadership.
Mr. Eworo particularly commended the focus on both infrastructure and capacity building for teachers, stating:
“If you have good buildings but lack well-trained personnel, the system will fail. Dr. Adagba has prioritized capacity building for teachers to ensure they deliver quality education to students. I’m impressed with the progress, especially the integration of technology, such as nursery and primary school pupils using laptops for learning.”

Dr. Adagba assured stakeholders of SUBEB’s openness to public scrutiny and support, which she believes will foster further transformation in the years to come. As Benue SUBEB continues to set new benchmarks in basic education, optimism remains high about the future of public schools under the leadership of Dr. Grace Adagba and Governor Hyacinth Alia.
