Senate probes Cameroon’s illegal annexation of Nigerian mangrove islands

Irked by the alleged annexation of the Nigeria’s mangrove Islands and maritime territories at Efiat-Mbo in Akwa Ibom State by the Republic of Cameroon, the Senate on Tuesday set up an adhoc committee to investigate the matter and report back with necessary recommendations in the next two months.
This was just as the Senate has urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate steps to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial waters, including securing over 2,560 oil wells identified within the disputed mangrove Islands in Akwa Ibom State.
The adhoc committee, as announced by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, would be chaired by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South) while senators Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central), Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West), Shehu Lawan Kaka (Borno Central), Ipalibo Harry Banigo (Rivers East), Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe (Cross River North), Ekong Sampson Akpan (Akwa Ibom South), Mohammed Sani Bello (Niger North) and Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East) would serve as members.
The Senate’s resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey who raised the alarm over the economic and territorial implications of Cameroon’s encroachment into Nigerian territory
