Talent Hunt: Kwande Hosts SUBEB Chairman’s 2021 Inter School Competition

Kwande Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) on Monday hosted Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Chairman’s Inter-school Sports festival 2021 at NKST Primary School, Ahobee, Ikyogen in Kwande LGA.

Speaking at the Grand finale of the occasion, the Executive Chairman SUBEB, Comrade Joseph Utse represented by Permanent Member 1 at the Board, Hon. Mike Kusah commended Kwande LGEA for being the first among the LGEAs to organize a sporting fiesta for pupils and students. He said, Benue SUBEB places high premium on sports development as it has been demonstrated through the procurement and distribution of sports equipment and kits to basic schools utilizing the 2018-2019 UBEC/BNSG intervention funds. This he believed would serve as a spring board towards the revival of sporting activities in public schools.

The SUBEB Boss charged all LGEAs to take a leaf from kwande by organizing sporting competitions for school children to discover talents that will be groomed to bring glory to the state and beyond in National and International competitions.

In her remarks, Executive Chairman, Kwande Local Government Council, Hon.( Mrs) Joyce Chianson lauded the efforts of the Kwande LGEA management for taking concise steps towards reviving school sports. She said, the festival which doubles as a Talent Hunt would raise future sports personalities for the State. The LG Boss pledged to support the festival and sued to do all within her powers to ensure the sustenance of the event.

On his part, Chairman of the occasion, Comrade Mike Ortom expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded him in Kwande LGA while commending them for their immense support to Governor Samuel Ortom’s administration. He said, Kwande LGA has always been at the front desk towards sports development in the state as demonstrated by the then Sir Akpoo Sports Competitions.

He pledged to support the revival of sporting events at the LGEA by liaising with the Ministry for Youth and Sports Development to select talented Students from kwande LGEA to join the State Football team. Comrade Ortom also pledged to train five Students from Kwande LGEA yearly through Seniority Secondary Schools in Makurdi.

In his speech, District Head of Liev Ward II, Zaki Abraham Kavga said, “the Primary School level is the foundation of learning and should not be toyed with”.To him, The festival had demonstrated that Education Managers in the State were harmoniously working towards raising the status of Basic Education Schools in the state.

Earlier in a welcome address, the Education Secretary, Kwande LGEA, Mrs Janet Gisa said, the decision to honor the SUBEB helmsman with sporting event stems was in recognition of his track record of achievements towards reviving sporting activities in basic schools in the state within a short time as Executive Chairman. She was optimistic that, the sports festival would serve as a unifying tool with the purpose of promoting peace among school children within the Geo- political blocs in the LGEA. She further stated that, with the pat on the back by stakeholders, sporting competitions in the LGEA has been boosted and a robust talent pool of athletes for future use will be harnessed.

Highlights of the occasion were match past by students/ pupils, grand finale football and handball matches, match between female and male teachers of the LGEA, presentation of trophies and prizes as well as adornment of dignitaries in Tiv traditional outfits.
