We Will Address Youth Empowerment Focusing On Progressive Education: Hon Folorunso Ola Segun

The Amuwo-Odofin All Progressives Congress candidate for Lagos state house of assembly in the 2023 general elections, Hon Folorunso Olaitan Segun, popularly known as Ola Western, has revealed part of his agenda to fix the vexed issues of youth unemployment, empowerment, and inclusiveness in leadership. Speaking to pressmen at a parley held on Thursday, 30th June, 2023, vintage grassroots leader, noted that a focus on progressive education will be the panacea to the perennial youth related issues in his constituency.

In his statement, “the utter neglect of the most productive stratum of our demography (youth) has set us back a great deal. There is no excuse for the failure to harness the large pool of youth potentials in Amuwo-Odofin. One sure way to go is by pursuing progressive education. By this it means we will not only look at just getting the education our present curriculum can offer us, which has made our youth not employable. We will focus on those capacity development initiatives that will equip them for the challenges of our contemporary society. The world is changing, and we must be ready to embrace change and technological innovations if we want to develop.”

Speaking further, Hon Ola Western said, “through the instrument of legislation, we shall make proposals to immediately re-jig our curriculum to make graduates of our learning institutions fully equipped to build a greater Lagos. Through direct impact, we will also try to catch them young in Amuwo-Odofin. Quoting a global educationist, Caroline Pratt, _’the most important phase of a child’s life was the beginning of it. He must be started right.’_ From primary through tertiary institutions of learning, we will device an education scheme that targets brilliant and talented but indigent pupils and students for educational support (scholarship, bursary, grants, etc.). The Spelling Bee project is an example to replicate; we can internalize ours.

Also from the direct impact approach we will see our attention focused on entrepreneurial education development. Here we will partner with the organized private sectors operating in Amuwo-Odofin while also attract the state government presence in the areas of job placement, leadership inclusiveness, business start-ups, and other areas of employment. *Progressive education is just the way to go.* ”

Rounding up his speech, the charismatic business mogul and philanthropist noted that, “I call on all the youth of our beloved community to partner with me in the journey to progress. Together we will deal with the problem of lack of representative leadership and youth neglect, and with our collective efforts Amuwo-Odofin shall be great again.”
